Why HDMI dominates TVs and home theater
HDMI is the standard connection on televisions, game consoles, AV receivers, projectors, streaming devices and soundbars. Its ecosystem includes AV-focused features such as ARC/eARC, allowing compatible TVs and audio systems to return audio over the HDMI connection.
Modern HDMI also supports gaming-oriented capabilities such as VRR and ALLM when implemented by the connected devices. For a console connected to a television, HDMI is normally the direct and simplest path.

Why DisplayPort is strong on PCs and monitors
DisplayPort is deeply integrated into graphics cards, professional monitors and PC workstations. VESA describes it as a de facto standard for PC monitors, and it supports capabilities that are especially useful in computer display environments.
One major difference is Multi-Stream Transport (MST), which can carry multiple display streams from one compatible DisplayPort source. With compatible hardware, this enables daisy-chain or MST hub configurations that are common in multi-monitor workstations.

DisplayPort over USB-C
DisplayPort Alt Mode allows compatible USB-C ports to carry DisplayPort video. This is why many thin laptops can drive monitors through USB-C docks or USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapters even though the computer has no full-size DisplayPort connector.
The USB-C connector alone does not guarantee video output. Check whether the port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt or USB4 display functionality.
Gaming: compare the actual port bandwidth, not the connector shape
For a gaming PC and monitor, either HDMI or DisplayPort can be the correct answer. First determine:
- The GPU’s HDMI and DisplayPort link capabilities
- The monitor’s corresponding input capabilities
- Your target resolution and refresh rate
- Required bit depth and HDR format
- Whether DSC is used
- VRR compatibility
A monitor may expose its highest refresh rate on DisplayPort, HDMI, or both depending on the design. Do not assume that DisplayPort is always faster or that HDMI is always more compatible.
Bandwidth comparison requires generation-specific numbers
HDMI 2.2 reaches up to 96Gbps, while HDMI 2.1-class Ultra High Speed systems operate up to 48Gbps. DisplayPort 2.x can reach the DP80/UHBR20 class at 80Gbps raw link rate. These numbers use different transport methods and encoding, so raw figures should not be compared without considering usable payload and the target video format.

Audio: HDMI has the home-theater advantage
Both interfaces can carry digital audio, but HDMI’s ARC/eARC ecosystem is specifically designed around televisions, AV receivers and soundbars. If your objective is a home-theater chain with TV audio return, HDMI is normally the appropriate interface.
Multi-monitor: DisplayPort has a structural advantage
MST is one of DisplayPort’s most practical differences. Compatible systems can transport multiple independent display streams through one source connection. This is useful in docking stations, workstation monitors and multi-display adapters.
HDMI does not use DisplayPort-style MST daisy chaining. If you need multiple HDMI displays from one source, the topology usually involves a dedicated splitter, switch, dock or graphics output arrangement, depending on whether you want mirrored or independent displays.

Adapters and conversion
Changing connector shape does not automatically preserve every feature. HDMI-to-DisplayPort and DisplayPort-to-HDMI conversions can be directional, and adapters may impose limits on refresh rate, HDR, VRR, audio or HDCP behavior.
